Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted disease. They appear as small white bumps, which may be either flat or rough in appearance, and they are found in the genital and anal regions. These growths are caused by a common virus which is highly contagious and easily spread between sexual partners. Most wart treatments can clear up the blemishes temporarily, but they do not completely eliminate the virus, and the growths typically reappear after a time. We can show you how to gently remove genital growths and deactivate the virus which causes them, preventing them from ever coming back.
The Cause of Genital Growths
Like other types of skin warts, growths on the genitals are caused by one of a strain of viruses known as human papilloma virus, or HPV — the same virus that causes cold sores and herpes. Most people have been exposed to the virus and carry it on the surface of their skin, but only about 1 in 10 people are infected.
HPV is tremendously contagious. Sexual partners can transfer the disease to one another, even if they do not have visible warts at the time.
Your doctor can normally tell that you have the disease by examining the lesions closely; a skin biopsy may also be required to rule out any more serious condition that may cause similar symptoms. If you have warts in the genital area, you will need to take precautions to avoid transmitting them to your partner.
Common Treatment Methods
Genital bumps can be removed in much the same manner as other types of skin growths. Your doctor can treat them either by cutting them off (under local anesthesia), freezing them, or burning them.
There are also prescription medications available that you can apply yourself at home, as well as over-the-counter remedies that you can purchase from most pharmacies. These medications typically contain a solution of salicylic acid.
There are drawbacks to these treatment methods, however. Neither surgery nor topical creams attack the virus that causes the warts; while the blemishes may be temporarily removed, there is a great chance that they will reappear later on. In addition, surgery may leave unattractive scars in place of the warts – hardly the result you are looking for.
Prescription medications and the topical creams you can buy contain chemical additives which can burn and damage your skin, especially in these sensitive areas. In many cases, they cause so much discomfort that their use is discontinued before they can work to remove warts.
