Message from Founding Presidents & Advisors of the
Third Japan-ASEAN Men’s Health Conference 2008

It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to The Third Japan-ASEAN Men’s Health & Aging Conference. With the success of our inaugural Conference held in Malaysia in 2005, we are pleased to announce that this year you will
be expecting to attend a Conference staged on an international front. Many countries in the ASEAN region, including Japan, are currently facing serious problems in dealing with the rocketing numbers of their graying population. This problem will be further aggravated when the country is not yet ready to properly accommodate an aging population. Hence, it is paramount for ASEAN countries to start preparing all the necessary facilities, lest it becomes a huge burden, both for the government as well as society in general.

Recent advances in medical technology and socioeconomic conditions have raised the life expectancy of men from
a regional average of 65 years to between 70 years and 80 years of age. The United Nations projects by 2050, the proportion of people above 60 will exceed for the fi rst time the proportion of children below 15 years of age, and
13 countries will have proportions greater than 10 percent of the most elderly (aged above 80) in their population. Southeast Asia will not be spared from this phenomenon. At this Conference, we will not only pursue further our discussion revolving men’s health issues, we will also attempt to look at how men’s health and aging issues are managed in ASEAN, especially Japan – a country whose population has the longest life expectancy in the world.
I am confi dent that this Conference is expected to be interesting, and delegates will gain a lot from the Japanese experience in men’s health and aging.

The scientifi c programme has been designed to cover a well-rounded range of topics. The series of plenary lectures and symposia will give us a comprehensive look at the experience of our peers, providing an insight into the best of current research in the fi eld. We will have with us an international faculty of experts to lead discussions, share knowledge and experiences, as well as provide varied perspectives in particular from ASEAN and Japan.

This Conference will offer an outstanding and tremendously promising platform for the exchange of knowledge and information, but also provide a closer cultural and social understanding between Japan and the ASEAN countries. Internationally acclaimed speakers from all parts of the world have been invited to deliver these prestigious lectures, or to participate and lead in these special symposia and workshops. Last but not least, this Conference, we believe, will be a good opportunity to network among colleagues in the region and around the world. It is indeed a splendid experience to have you as part of this global learning initiative, especially in this contemporary fi eld of Men’s Health and Aging.

We look forward to meeting each and every one of you at the Conference.

Message from President of Singapore Urological
Association

Dear Medical Colleague

In recent years, the increase in spending on “wellness” programmes, health spas, aesthetic medicine and the like has risen at three times the rate of traditional medical expenditure in Europe. This trend is likely to be repeated in Singapore. Why?

The answer lies in the accountant’s defi nition of health – “Good health is the one before the zeros; remove the one and all you have is zero”. Affl uence cannot be fully enjoyed without good health. Therefore as societies grow in affl uence, people will seek solutions, however transient, which enhance their sense of physical and psychological
well-being.

This is a remarkable opportunity for the medical profession to practice preventive medicine. Neither innovation nor increased capacity of medical services can match the explosive increase of many potentially preventable diseases. What better way to utilize limited health care resources than to prevent disease? Rather than ponder whether this
is a legitimate arena for practitioners of the healing arts, we should grasp this opportunity to practice opportunistic screening and preventive medicine to ensure, through our much deeper knowledge of medicine that the healthy complexion of a patient is more than skin deep.

This conference, conducted by experts from many different fi elds,
will bring you up to speed on important advances in Male Wellness. Can you afford to miss it? I think not.

Looking forward to meeting you,

E Kesavan FRCSEd FRCSG FAMS(Urol) MD
President

Message from the Ambassador

Dear Registrant from Japan and ASEAN member countries,

My Heartiest Congratulations to the organizers of this very important event!

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to all Japanese and ASEAN participants of the JAPAN-ASEAN CONGRESS ON MEN’S HEALTH 28-29 NOV – 3 DEC 2008, a medical congress targetedat the increasingly important realm of Men’s Health.

The challenges and issues posed by men’s health is a looming problem in Japan and other rapidly
developing regions of Asia especially among ASEAN member countries.

Women’s health is fairly well developed and women are particularly well looked after in our current well-women clinical services.

Whereas for men, there are less well developed services as their medical problems differ from that of women in many ways.

Current medical treatments are more “disease targeted” and fail to understand that very different
approaches of preventive and therapeutic solutions are needed to deal with manifestation in
men.

With the increasing number (the increasing economic and social burden) of men living longer in Japan, and I understand, also in Singapore, as well as other fast developing ASEAN countries,
this Congress is timely for Japan-Asean cooperation in terms of information-sharing and cross-country training.

The added JAPANESE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, MEDICINES AND HEALTHCARE PRODUCTS
EXHIBITION held in conjunction with this JAPAN-ASEAN CONGRESS is partly to promote
medical cooperation between Japan and Singapore.

It is also to promote Japanese medical products and services to participating Singapore and ASEAN medical caregivers, policy makers and doctors.

The exhibition will showcase Japanese excellence in the medical fi eld and will provide potential business opportunities to the budding healthcare industry in ASEAN and Asia.

I would strongly encourage Japanese and doctors from the ASEAN and pharmaceutical supplies
manufacturers to take part in this bold cooperative venture between our nations to improve the
health of men in this part of the world!

Welcome to Singapore!
Ambassador Makoto Yamanaka (Singapore)

Message from World President-Elect of the
International College of Surgeons

It is with great pleasure that I write this message on behalf of the International College of
Surgeons, a world body of surgeons from over 100 countries distributed worldwide, including
United States, India, Philippines, Japan, Australia, Europe and Singapore, to name a few. It is
very timely to have such a Conference on Men’s Health and Aging as it is now common knowledge that the male is living longer and the population in many countries is greying further.

The educational value of this Conference looks superlative, judging from the wide range of
varying pertinent topics, which will be presented during the meeting. The Conference will be of
tremendous value for both the medical and allied professions as well as the general public. Prof.
Peter Lim and his Organising Committee are to be congratulated for the development of such an
excellent Conference. As World President Elect of the International College of Surgeons, I wish this
Conference every success.

PROF. CHRISTOPHER CHEN
World President-Elect
International College of Surgeons
